The Finnish concrete manufacturer Rakennusbetoni- ja Elementti Oy was looking for new ways to improve concrete products and reduce the emissions, and wanted to introduce new products to the market that was starting to demand more environmentally-friendly concrete.
The customer and Carbonaide teamed up to upgrade the concrete production facility in Hollola, Finland, with a new curing chamber that integrated Carbonaide’s carbon dioxide curing technology. The first industrial pilot was launched in August 2023.
Carbonaide’s technology tackles two big problems at the same time – the vast emissions from the concrete industry and the need to find permanent storage for CO₂. By replacing part of the cement with CO₂, Carbonaide’s technology allowed Rakennusbetoni- ja Elementti Oy to reduce production costs and lower emissions. Already in the first product release, a remarkable share of 40% of the cement use was reduced with CO₂ leading to approximately 40% reduction of a binder-based carbon footprint and an additional 17% carbon removal through mineralization.
The first commercial product – a partition wall element – has been commercially available from March 2024 onward.
