Foamit Roof Tiles – CO2 Stored by Carbonaide

Carbonaide, Foamit and Rakennusbetoni joined forces to create a new kind of low-carbon roof slab that stores carbon dioxide permanently.

The challenge

Foamit, a producer of foam glass aggregates manufactured from purified recycled glass, was looking for new ways to use their material, which can be used in a range of infrastructure and building construction solutions, enabling sustainable and cost-efficient construction projects.

The solution

Foamit Roof Slab – A Low‑Carbon Solution for Modern Roofing

The Foamit Roof Slab is a low‑carbon roofing solution designed specifically for ventilated attic structures in low‑slope residential, commercial, and office buildings. It enables designers, contractors, and developers to deliver roof structures that meet demanding environmental targets without compromising on technical performance or durability.

The slab incorporates a fine‑grained, lightweight, and fully recyclable foam glass aggregate made from 100% recycled container glass. Foam glass has long been used as a lightweight aggregate in building, infrastructure, and landscaping applications, and is now being introduced for the first time in this new product category. By utilizing foam glass aggregate, the carbon footprint of roof structures can be reduced even further.

The slab and its low‑carbon concrete are manufactured by Rakennusbetoni ja Elementti, using Carbonaide’s unique technology, combining proven industrial production with next‑generation low‑carbon innovation.

The solution delivers versatile benefits throughout the entire building life cycle – from the construction phase to maintenance and life cycle costs.
