We at Carbonaide are proud to announce a significant step forward on our way to transforming the construction industry and the carbon credit markets. The Finnish law firm Castrén & Snellman will purchase the first certified carbon credits created through our proven technology for CO₂ mineralization in concrete. This marks the beginning of a new era where concrete production acts as a source of carbon credits in the voluntary carbon markets, delivering both environmental and economic benefits.
Concrete is one of the most used and most versatile materials in the world. It is also a major source of GHG emissions. This makes low-carbon concrete a vital technology in reaching global climate targets. Carbonaide has developed a technology for utilising captured CO2 in the curing of concrete. This reduces the emissions in concrete production and transforms the concrete into a carbon sink. Most importantly, Carbonaide’s technology also results in stronger concrete and a higher production speed, making it a technologically viable alternative to traditional production.
Carbonaide credits offer exact measurement and permanent storage of carbon
Carbonaide offers carbon credits based on CO₂ mineralization in concrete, turning concrete factories into carbon sinks. With multiple implementations underway, the Carbonaide credits are now available to companies seeking reliable solutions for storing carbon removed from the atmosphere.
Carbonaide’s curing technology transforms gaseous CO₂ into stable carbonate minerals within concrete, ensuring permanent storage even if the concrete were demolished. A key element of the technology is a service platform that allows the exact measurement of CO2 mineralised in each production batch. This means that the amount of carbon stored can be determined without relying on assumptions and estimates.
Carbon credit sales strengthen the business case for low-carbon concrete
The Carbonaide CO₂ curing system improves production efficiency and enables cement savings in concrete production, reducing both emissions and costs. When combined with revenue from carbon credit sales, the business case becomes even stronger, offering extremely short payback times.
Tapio Vehmas, CEO of Carbonaide: “The secret to economically viable carbon-negative concrete lies in using CO₂ to enhance production while storing it permanently. In addition to offering reliable carbon storage for credit buyers, the credit sales open a new revenue stream for both Carbonaide and concrete manufacturers who are Carbonaide customers, making green concrete profitable.”
Carbon storage begins at Lakan Betoni factory in Finland
The credits purchased by Castrén & Snellman will be based on permanent CO₂ storage at the Lakan Betoni concrete factory in Joensuu, Finland. As announced earlier, Lakan Betoni is implementing the Carbonaide technology, with production expected to start in the first quarter of 2026.
“Anna Kuusniemi-Laine, ESG Partner at Castrén & Snellman: “The mitigation of global warming calls for rapid emission reductions, but also for new technologies that can capture and store carbon permanently at scale. Carbon credits are a vital tool in financing the solutions that the planet acutely needs. By cooperating with Carbonaide, C&S can contribute to the development of the voluntary carbon markets. We are proud to partner with a research-based Finnish startup that has the potential to transform the built environment into a carbon sink.”
Certified by Isometric for credibility and transparency
To ensure the highest standards of verification, the credits will be issued through our cooperation with Isometric, who act as the certification partner for the carbon credits.
About Carbonaide
We make green concrete profitable. Carbonaide’s mission is to turn building materials from a large emission source into a carbon sink. Our international team, headquartered in Finland, combines knowledge in material sciences, carbon markets, and software engineering to enable the production of carbon-negative concrete. With the Carbonaide CO₂ solution, concrete manufacturers can utilise carbon dioxide to improve their products and store carbon permanently.
