Optimize the footprint of concrete
Our mission at Carbonaide is easy to state: we turn building materials from a large emission source into a carbon sink. With the Carbonaide Service Platform, the construction industry can utilize carbon dioxide in their production and permanently store carbon as carbonates in building materials.
This section is dedicated to explaining how our solution works in practice.
There are three main qualities of our solution that make it unique:
Utilize and store
With the Carbonaide solution, our customers can both use carbon dioxide to improve their products, and permanently store the carbon dioxide in the same process. The benefits of the Carbonaide technology range from lower costs due to the possibility of decreasing the amount of cement in the concrete mix to faster production times.
At the same time, the Carbonaide technology stores CO2 permanently into the concrete products and significantly reduces their environmental impact.
The combination of many simultaneous benefits makes the solution very different from other carbon removal methods, such as biochar production, which require a completely separated process for carbon storage, or projects like reforestation that only solve the CO2 problem partly or not at all.
Permanent storage through mineralization
Our solution sinks carbon dioxide into building materials with a mineralization process that turns CO2 into carbonates – CO2 to CO3, if you allow a harsh simplification of the chemistry.
This is a process that occurs naturally on the surface of concrete, we just make the process X times faster. The result is permanent carbon storage without sacrificing the quality of the concrete products.
It is a service
Our solution naturally requires some hardware and comes with care and CO2 sourcing services (more info about these on the Carbonaide Solution pages), but the heart of the solution is the Carbonaide Service Platform, a cloud-based software solution that measures, manages and optimizes the usage and flow of CO2 in the process.
The Carbonaide Service Platform also verifies and certifies the amount of CO2 that has actually been carbonated into the concrete products so that our customers can report the environmental benefits, and get carbon credits, if needed.
In the following pages, you can find further information and examples about how carbon dioxide that we infuse during the Carbonaide process changes the characteristics of concrete and the concrete manufacturing process.
